Di Matteo seeks to erase bitter memory

Roberto Di Matteo is looking forward to having the opportunity to help mend the heartache of Chelsea s 2008 Champions League final defeat.

The Blues narrowly missed out on European glory four years ago where they lost out on penalties to Manchester United with John Terry missing a decisive spot kick that would have seen them crowned champions.

The Stamford Bridge outfit, and in particular owner Roman Abramovich, are desperate to lift the trophy and Di Matteo said he is eager to erase the memories suffered in Moscow.

Of course we ve had a conversation about that final, and though it s in the past, it was a great opportunity for the club to win the competition, Di Matteo said.

Now, we have another opportunity and we are very happy that we ve been able to give ourselves that opportunity, and we want to try and give ourselves the best chance to win it this time.

Chelsea s opponents Bayern Munich lost their last game 5-2 to Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Pokal final, though Di Matteo believes that the result matters little to Saturday s showdown.

I know a lot of people are speculating because of Bayern s last game, but you don t assess a team over just one match, he insisted.

They re a fantastic team, they have some excellent players, and it s going to be a tough game. That s what you expect when you re in the Champions League final.

Di Matteo will be unable to call upon Terry, Ramires, Raul Meireles and Branislav Ivanovic for the final, with the quartet all suspended, but the interim coach has complete confidence in the players who are set to step in for the big occasion.

We have a good squad, a squad that has actually carried us so far because we have been dealing with three competitions, he said.

We have tried to achieve all our targets and everybody that has played and filled in has been excellent. So again we will make use of our squad and I m sure that whoever will play will give 100 percent.
